GEORGE MAYER
George Mayer: Exploring the Human Psyche through Photography
These works transcend place, time, and identity, depicting symbolic representations of the soul—the intricate essence of the human psyche. Through photography, the artist explores the unconscious, using light and shadow to symbolize oppositions like soul and body, thought and action, life and death. Inspired by the Taoist Yin-Yang philosophy, these contrasts dynamically shape existence.
Drawing on 20th-century psychology and techniques like meditation and lucid dreaming, the artist connects with the "anima," a Jungian concept embodying feminine traits within the male psyche, such as emotional intuition and sensitivity to the irrational. Vivid, chaotic imagery from the imagination is refined into minimalistic compositions, reflecting the interplay of strength and vulnerability.
Darkness, like the unconscious, represents the unknown and evokes fear. By confronting this inner darkness, we transcend fear and move toward light. These works guide viewers on a journey of introspection, encouraging the discovery of self-awareness and transformation.
