About the artist

After completing his art history degree, Barry Kornbluh (US,1952) moved to New York in 1977 where he started to work in the archives of Magnum Photo. At the same, he studied photography with Lisette Model at the New York School for Social Research. Model guided him toward a personal and intuitive style. Poetic images of family and friends recorded in grainy black and white. Blurred and atmospheric, dark and dreamy. Pictures of children playing and running full of energy, a child on her back looking towards the world of the photographer.

Later he assisted photographers Elliot Erwitt, Susan Meiselas and Gilles Peress. By the mid 80’s, Kornbluh was documenting the New York Jazz scene on assignment. In the 1990’s Kornbluh moved to Amsterdam where he continued his work. He remains deeply committed to a signature style developed over 30 years ago, marked by both intimacy and mystery.
